United Airlines plans to sack around 950 airline
pilot jobs starting this summer. This follows a
previously-announced announcement that they would
chop 1,600 salaried positions and reduce their
aircraft fleet.
United told its pilots union about the cuts on
Monday. The Chicago-based carrier says it's still
working with the unions on how the reductions will
go into effect.
Phone call messages left for the pilot's union had
not been returned at the time of going to press.
Spokeswoman for United Airlines, Ms Megan McCarthy
said that the first layoff notices will go out in
mid-July and will come into effect in September. Ms
McCarthy said the cuts will continue into 2009.
Last week, United Airlines management released
details at an investors' conference on the airline
operator's plan to shed up to 1,600 staff jobs.
